You Wash Your Butt First, Then Blot Dry.
There’s confusion in the ranks and someone needs to make a public service announcement.
I travel a lot which means I’ve seen a lot of overseas bathrooms. Standard western toilets all the way through to simple squat toilets. One of the differences between plumbing designs is that some systems aren’t built to accept the flushing of used toilet paper and to do so puts the toilet at risk of a block which is an unfortunate situation for everybody.
Local bathrooms in the Philippines and Indonesia are obvious examples.
A wastebasket or bin is provided for used paper but one of the issues is that no one takes a moment to explain to clueless tourists what a butt gun is and what the paper is used for meaning that when you visit bathrooms that are used by western tourists, the bins often contain nasty used toilet paper and they stink. (Yuk!)
In western countries, toilet paper is used to clean oneself after toilet use but in areas where toilet paper can’t be flushed, water is instead provided. It may be provided with a bucket and tap system or a bidet hose might be provided.
