Why Social Justice Warriors Get a Bad Rap.

They lose sight of what’s important.

There’s a couple of different types. There are people who do great things. They are effective and efficient, knowledgeable and passionate while supporting an extremely worthwhile cause. They are mainly concerned with achieving a positive impact and outcome. These are the ones that get sh*t done. These effective activists have continued and wholesale support.

But then there’s another sort.

This is the best analogy that I can come up with to highlight the difference:

On Planet Pleb, live the Drabs and the Fleeks.

The Drabs are oppressing the Fleeks and a small valiant band of Fleeks wants societal change. They talk to some enlightened Drabs, who agree that change is necessary. This small group creates a movement called ‘ Fleeks and Drabs together’. We’ll call this lot the ‘originals’.

The originals undertake a lot of hard back-breaking work. They fight battles in the courts and in the media, always keeping their goal of achieving equality for Drabs and Fleeks both front and center. They create parades and shows to raise awareness. They undertake studies and research, presenting findings that show the reluctant, angry or defensive Drabs just how alike they are.
