Was she a witch… Or did Hansel and Gretel smear an old lady to cover up a crime?
I propose an alternate theory. We’ve been faithfully retelling Hansel and Gretel's murderous cover story.
We’ve all heard the story. During a time of famine, Hansel and Gretel are abandoned in the forest by their parents (A+ parenting right there) and come across a house made of candy. They’re captured by the witch who lives in the house but the witch is outwitted and tossed into her own oven whereupon they raid her house for valuables and return home. Ding dong the witch is dead…hurrah.
Me? I found the story suspicious. The first thing we need to keep in mind is that history is written by the winners and the winners in this story are Hansel and Gretel. But if we attempt to look at through an unbiased lens, another viewpoint emerges.
The story as recited by Hansel and Gretel:
· They claim that the house was made from candy and then go on to admit that they were vandalizing a property by eating parts of the said house which would have affected the weather-tight integrity of the residence.
· The occupant of the house was elderly, sight-impaired, had withered hands and mobility issues serious enough to warrant a corrective crutch and yet they…
