The Problem With Amy.
An Outsiders Perspective on the Amy Cooper Incident.
3 min readMay 31, 2020
We’ve all seen the video of Amy Cooper trying to SWAT Christian Cooper (no relation) in The Ramble section of Central Park, New York. It’s a revolting demonstration of entitlement and privilege that could have ended in the death or arrest of an innocent man.
I live in New Zealand so I wasn’t observing through the same societal lens. When I watched it, I didn’t watch it with the same understanding or prejudices that many Americans might have felt as they watched the events unfold.
- Amy exaggerates a false claim that she’s in imminent danger in an attempt to incite a police incident on an innocent man.
- She acts hysterically to escalate the sense of danger when she’s clearly not being threatened.
- She was willing to gamble with a man's life as a revenge tactic when he wouldn’t stop filming.
- She had no issues wasting police resources and putting everyone at risk in the most juvenile fashion all to pay Christian back for telling her to abide by the park rules.
