Is ‘OK Boomer’ Really That Awful?

It's causing a fracas.

Its usage is causing international headlines. A conservative radio host (Bob Lonsberry) actually labeled the phrase “the n-word of ageism” in a very controversial (and now-deleted) tweet. It’s a phrase that’s gone viral.

I’ll be honest… I’m not seeing what the whole furor is about... maybe because I’m a Generation X’er? It’s slightly provocative and a bit condescending, sure but to me, it’s the equivalent of a tired and somewhat patronizing ‘whatever’ from a few Millenials who are tired of being blamed for destroying a diverse range of things, from free speech and wine corks to sex and even trees.

And it’s not just Millenials using it. The generations preceding the Baby Boomer Generation are all having a crack. Still, the level of Boomer anger still seems out of proportion given that it’s a vague response and actually incorporates part of the description ‘Generation: Baby Boomer’. It’s a retaliatory kickback against a group of people (who are often Boomers) that offer financial views and criticism based on outdated policies and perspectives.

Is everyone using the meme? No.

Are all Generation: Baby Boomers offended at its use? No.

Are enough people using it that it’s really become a thing? Yes.
