Euthanasia: I Want the Right to Punch My Own Ticket.
The hotly contested End of Life Choice Bill passed 69–51 which will send the final decision to a public referendum.
The End of Life Choice Bill passed its third reading on the 13th of November meaning it will now go to a referendum and if sanctioned by the public, then a law that allows the terminally ill to request assistance to end their existence will pass into law. It will be a historic moment for New Zealand.
The bill is expected to pass as support for the choice of assisted suicide has always been strong. In 2003, 73% percent were in favor, in 2015, 75% were in favor, in 2017, 74% were in favor and in 2019, 72% are in favor.
This has, (of course), roused partisan support in New Zealand with both sides taking to social media to applaud or condemn the historic decision. Rhetoric is flying back and forth on discussion boards. All of the old arguments are being thrust into the discourse which is understandable because euthanasia is an emotive issue but the list of objections isn’t rooted in reality and is being bandied about in spite of the fact that the law…
