Aren’t Men Sick of Being Framed as Rapists?
“She was asking for it” is a direct attack on men's choices and futures.
It’s time to examine some root causes. One of the most common forms of sexism that men face is an insidious form of benevolent sexism inflicted on them by men and women alike. It’s a two-fer — it insults both men and women. It starts out as “she was asking for it”, implying that it’s a woman’s fault she got raped or sexually assaulted because of her clothing choice. 55% of men and 41% of women believe it.
On its face, it appears as just systemic sexism against women… but if you peel back the layers and take a closer look at the root cause and underlying belief:
“Men are child-like with such poor impulse control that they’ll rape women if they expose too much skin because they’ve never learned to control themselves.”
It paints all men as dangerous.
It’s grossly unfair.
I hate the ‘she was asking for it’ mentality when aimed at sexually assaulted women but people seem to miss the deeper insult to all men that underlies the claim. There’s a sting in the tail that frames all men as probable rapists:
- They‘ll rape based on an outfit choice.
- The entire male gender is dangerous.
